ICC’10 - An Industrial Example: Powder to 3D Print Production

Presentation by Esther Valliant, PhD, Himed Biomaterials Research Scientist

There is no denying excitement for 3D printing of ceramics, including calcium phosphate bioceramics, especially for prototyping new designs and patient-specific medical devices. As this technology is still in the early stages, there are limited examples of the successful adoption of 3D-printed calcium phosphate medical devices in industry. Biomaterials Research Scientist Esther Valliant, PhD, presents a case study from a manufacturer’s perspective embracing this technology and covering the full manufacturing chain: from the production of the ceramic powder, to custom 3D-printing ink development, to prototype production of hydroxyapatite (HA) medical devices for the customer.

This talk will be delivered during Symposium 9: Next Generation Bioceramics and Bioglasses | Session: Dental and orthopedic bioceramics.

6/19/24 | 11:00 AM EDT

Online Webinar - Hosted by
Additive Manufacturing Magazine

Presenters: Craig Rosenblum, President, Himed | Daniel Bomze, Director of Medical Solutions, Lithoz | Lisa Marie Del Re, Chief Strategy Officer, SiNAPTIC Technologies

How can ceramic 3D printing provide a unique solution for every patient? What is the added value?

Ceramic 3D printing is not about replacing well-established processes — it's here to complete them. In this webinar, Lithoz will look at several current applications in the medical field: first with silicon nitride manufacturer SiNAPTIC Technologies and then bioceramic experts Himed. With their years of experience in medical applications, this webinar will explain in full detail how ceramics can complement the metal materials conventionally used for implants and why ceramic is even sometimes the material of choice over metal.

OMTEC 2024 In-Booth Presentation

Presentation by Esther Valliant, PhD, Himed Biomaterials Research Scientist

Thursday, June 13, 2024
10:00 AM - 10:15 AM CDT
Exhibit Hall | Booth 247

3D-printing of bioactive ceramics like hydroxyapatite for medical devices is an exciting new technology. It can produce complex geometries that are impossible through conventional manufacturing. However, there are considerable barriers to entry. Developing prototypes or performing small-scale preliminary testing requires huge investment and specialized expertise.

To help orthopedic device manufacturers explore this new frontier of healing technologies, Himed has created a new contract research lab — the Bioceramics Center of Excellence (BCOE) — to conduct rapid R&D of calcium phosphate technology through bioink composition and material enhancements.

This presentation will highlight how the BCOE can reduce barriers for companies that are exploring bioceramic solutions like 3D printing. It covers:

  • Reducing risk by outsourcing prototypes

  • Material parameters to meet manufacturers’ design goals

  • Iterative design and preliminary testing

  • Refining process and parameters for scale-up manufacturing

Ceramics Expo 2024 - The Great Variability of Hydroxyapatite: Exploring Different Forms and Unique Materials Engineering Applications

Presentation by Craig Rosenblum, Himed President
April 30, 2024 | 1:00–1:50 PM | Novi, MI

With hydroxyapatite (HA), as with all things in nature, there is a high degree of variability. This can be most readily appreciated when comparing SEM images of HA manufactured with differing processes. Recognizing that the material properties of different forms of HA can dramatically impact a host of outcomes like flowability, dissolution rate, and cellular adhesion, it is important to understand two things when sourcing hydroxyapatite:

  1. What are the functional objectives being sought from the hydroxyapatite?

  2. What are the material properties most likely to yield those functional objectives?

This presentation offers researchers and medical device manufacturers insights into how a biomaterial like hydroxyapatite can be customized to better support the efficacy of implantable medical devices.

Please join Himed’s President, Craig Rosenblum, in conversation with Shawn Allan, VP of Lithoz America and Parimal Bapat, Principal Engineer from Orchid Orthopedic Solutions. The panel will be moderated by Tim Keenan, Assistant Professor of Biomaterials Engineering, Alfred University.
